Vaccinations and Your Child
While Dr Silver understands the perspective of these concerned practitioners, he chooses to follow the principles of informed consent and harm reduction in regards to vaccinations. Because of this, Dr Silver works with all families, regardless of vaccination status.
The Vaccine Controversy
There is a great deal of debate in our society right now about the safety and sensible use of vaccines. Many people see this as a black and white issue: they either believe that vaccines are completely good, or that they are entirely bad. The reality is that every vaccine carries some risk, as does every illness we vaccinate for.
We believe in a family’s right to make decisions about their child’s vaccinations based on informed consent. Informed consent is a medical model in which a doctor engages in an open discussion with you about your or your child's health, giving you all of the information necessary for you to make your own decision based on the facts.
This means that Dr Silver will answer all of your questions and concerns regarding vaccines and educate you on their potential side effects, their benefits, and the risks associated with the illnesses we vaccinate for. He also discusses alternate vaccine schedules and options regarding selective vaccination.
Measles, Pertussis, Meningitis
In the United States, we currently vaccinate children for 16 illnesses on a routine basis. Some of these, such as chickenpox and rotavirus, pose little threat to healthy children, while others, such as measles, pertussis and pneumococcal disease, can lead to severe illness or even death. While the vaccines for each of these illnesses carry their own risk, it’s important to consider this against the risk of your child contracting the disease.
While there is still a great deal of controversy surrounding the idea of vaccine injury, many families have reported negative changes in health or behavioral status after vaccination. These may range in severity from recurrent fevers and irritability to neurological inflammatory conditions such as autism. While some of these reactions may be coincidental or related to a combination of environmental and genetic factors, the role of immunizations in pushing certain medically vulnerable children into severe reactions is not currently well researched or understood.
Regardless of the condition or the severity, every medical intervention, including vaccination, carries some risk. That means that certain children will be more susceptible to that risk than others, based on their unique genetic and physical makeup. Dr Silver uses a combination of detoxification pathway support, nutrition, homeopathy, and anti-inflammatory protocols to help children who have developed chronic illness at the time of or after vaccination.
Alternate Vaccine Schedules
There are several options for families that have concerns about following the CDC vaccination schedule. Some parents choose to vaccinate for certain illnesses and not others, depending on the risks involved with each disease. Some choose to vaccinate fully, but to space out their vaccines, allowing their child’s immune system to respond to one vaccination before moving on to the next. Understanding your options and the benefits of each can go a long way in helping you make the right choice for your child.
NOTE: While he offers extensive vaccine counseling and education, because Dr Silver's medical license is issued by the state of Vermont he is currently unable to give in-office vaccines in Michigan.
